He owned and operated the D1 Driving School in New Castle for several years before becoming the Athletic Director and Assistant Principal at South Decatur High School in Greensburg.

Dean returned to his alma mater, Alexandria-Monroe Jr. and Sr. High School, where he became the Assistant Principal and Boys Varsity Basketball Coach and Varsity Assistant Baseball Coach. He briefly worked for Envision Laboratories in Indianapolis before accepting a Social Studies teaching position at Switzerland County High School in Vevay, Indiana, where he quickly became a beloved member of the school family and the community. Dean was an official with the IHSAA and officiated numerous sporting events.
